This week when she revealed that she experimented with a same-sex relationship as a teen although many people question their sexuality at some point in their life, especially during their younger years, most don’t reveal their desire to experiment publicly due to longstanding social stigma; however, “The View” co-host Rosie Perez directly challenged that stigma.
Relating to CBS Information, while providing a revealing speech at TrevorLIVE New York on Monday, a conference for the LGBT non-profit The Trevor venture, Perez talked about having a crush on a lady known as Michelle while she was at junior senior high school.
“All i needed doing was hump her, ” Perez stated; but, she explained that she ended up being insecure and ashamed to be interested in an other woman.
“I suppressed the desire and suppressed the desire and suppressed the desire until Michelle 1 day began humping on me, ” she revealed.
Unfortuitously, their relationship ultimately finished and Perez ended up being “hurt” by the breakup. Making matters more serious that she was too afraid of enduring any homophobic remarks or judgment to speak about her heartbreak with anyone for her was the fact.
“That silence brought shame, ” she stated. “i did son’t have a residential area. I did son’t have The Trevor Project. ”
“I’m maybe maybe not the only person that went through this questioning period. I’m perhaps not the only person that suppressed those emotions. Whom hid their tale, ” Perez said, speaing frankly about the importance of The Trevor Project’s crisis hotline and resources for teenagers.
“If I experienced others, especially grownups, if I happened to be just in a position to call up plus they said, ‘Oh, we humped the Michelle-type person too, you’re normal, don’t stress. You’re either gonna click here, here or perhaps in the middle, don’t concern yourself with it, it’ll pass. You’re simply figuring it down, ’ even that facile statement … that could have made a big difference within the world, ” she added.
She’s grateful she had “some wonderful people in my life, specifically my father and my aunt but also community leaders that said, ‘No, it’s okay to be different and just let your spirit shine although she didn’t have The Trevor Project, Perez explained. ’”
The actress, who married her husband Eric Haze last year, says she is heterosexual although Perez is comfortable now with sharing her same-sex experience.
“I understand I’m perhaps not lesbian, homosexual or whatever, I’m a quasi-straight person, we still went throughout that duration. And I also thought I happened to be alone, ” she stated.
Perez finished her message by sharing the advice that is same elders inside her life provided her about residing freely and easily.
“There’s no thing that is such normal. What’s the norm will be different, ” said Perez.
